An Apple A Day

Now that you have embraced walking on these cool, crisp, fall days, why don’t you take advantage of the health and taste benefits of another of fall’s pleasures by adding a couple of apples to your daily diet? According to a study done by Florida State University, recently highlighted in Shape magazine, “apples really do help keep the doctor away!”

The fall is the best time to enjoy fresh, juicy apples right off the tree but you can savor this healthy fruit long after fall has gone by drying apple slices in your own oven.

To Dry Apples

Preheat your oven to the lowest setting. Wash the apples thoroughly to get rid of any pesticides. Core, halve and slice the apples into 1/8″ slices. Place the slices on a cookie sheet  making sure the pieces do not touch. Place the cookie sheet in the oven. After the apples have been drying for about 6-8 hours flip them over and dry another  8 hours or so. Depending on the temperature of the oven, drying the slices can take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. The goal is to remove all the moisture. When they are totally dry, cool them and place in airtight containers.
